Check out this UFO hotspot map of the United States. Then ask yourself two questions. 1) Why is there a stereotype that it’s only dumb Southern hicks who see UFOs? 2) Why are there so many UFO sightings around Area 51?
I’ll provide my own answers. First, because it’s culturally acceptable to make fun of Southerners. This is why people think it’s funny to make fun of tornado victims who happen to live in trailers. Could you do the same for people in New Orleans or Florida? No way. And second, because people see what they want to see. They go to Area 51 hoping to see UFOs and are not surprised when they see them. (Of course, anything you see in the sky that you can’t identify is UFO.)
