Mike,

I have not seen it yet. I have heard mixed reviews on it. But the one common observation is the total evil personified through the Joker character. I may see it this weekend. I will let you know.

I think you are right isolation and individualism have affect the church and our society. We could resolve some issues hurting us if we just changed those things. This post made me think I have been going to the same church off and on for twenty years and I don't talk to anybody from there on a daily basis.

I never thought about like, interesting. I don't think medal count gives any country bragging rights. I am glad that somebody from St. Louis won gold in track and field and that she came trained for a while at Jackie Joyner Kersse Complex. It shows that giving back to the community works.

John H., well...um...well, we have more medals and you lost two wars against us, so take that! Crap, I'm proving my own point.

Seriously, though, feeling good about your country's athlethes and having healthy patriotism because they are winning is good. Thinking your nation is better than everyone else because you have better beach volleyball players, not so much.

Barry, the thing I love about the internet is that I can make fairly rigid black and white statements and there are people out there who will push back against that and show there is more nuance than I was willing to admit at first. For me, this is a good thing.

As far as "The Dark Knight" is concerned, I thought it was a good movie. Perhaps a bit overhyped (as all movies tend to be), but an excellent comic book/action/crime movie. Some people are comparing it to "The Godfather", but I would say it better compares to "Heat", one of my all time favorite movies. Also, the new Joker is incredible, one of the truly terrifying villains of our day (with a tip o' the hat to Alan Moore's "The Killing Joke" which they borrowed from liberally). What did you think?

I might agree with you in other circumstances, but over here in Britain we're too busy enjoying the heady and unfamiliar feeling of getting lots of gold medals (16, the most we've achieved for a century). So shut up. :-)

I will agree that these aren't my grandfather's Olympics. Things have changed quite a bit. To some degree there is good reason to be cynical.

Somewhat off topic, what did you think of "The Dark Knight"?

National competition is good, but what I'm talking about is nationalism. Most of the time we don't care about the athletes, as long as they win gold (of course, I'm generalizing here), which makes us feel superior as a nation. "We're a better country than China/Russia/England/etc. because we have more medals than they do." To me, this makes no sense and is what the national media is engaging in. You might argue this isn't actually happening, but I've seen plenty of it on TV* and in conversations with people.

This doesn't mean we have to feel bad about ourselves as a nation all the time; it's not an either/or proposition. Of course, none of this is helped by the fact that many nations are sending athletes who are not from the actual nation they allegedly represent, which, added to the professional athlete question casts doubts on the "Who do they represent?" discussion.

(*Consider last night's debate over whether the American girl was robbed of a medal whilst completely ignoring that the British girl did pretty darn good and didn't come anywhere near the podium.)

What's so bad about us feeling good about ourselves as a nation. With so much of the elitist media telling us how bad we are I like the competitive spirit at the nation level. I think competition is good. I do have a problem with some of the athletes being professionals and not amateurs, but aside from that I like the idea of the medal count.

[...] The solution to this, says Fraezee, is in rekindling the neighborhood. The community church is important, where people are not driving long distances to church meetings, but are worshiping close to their homes with their very neighbors. (Sounds interesting, doesn’t it?)
Murray, thanks for the comment. Needless to say (although I'm going to say it anyway), I agree with you. To say we were created for something greater than the earth is only partially true and completely misses the point.

Well, there are some really good Bible iPhone apps. The YouVersion free app is good, as long as you always have a wifi or 3G/edge connection, and a few paid versions are excellent. The problem is that they aren't going to be free because of the amount of translations they use.

Hi Mike,

Refreshing to hear that you also see God restoring the earth & setting up his Kingdom here. Num 14:21; Psa 72:19; Hab 2:14; & Mat 6:10 have always sounded to me like God created earth (& us) with the purpose of filling it with his Glory.
